In a significant development for Ireland’s workforce, employees are now entitled to five paid sick days per year. This change, effective from the 1st of January 2024, is the second phase of the Statutory Sick Pay (SSP) scheme which was first introduced in January 2023.

The journey to five days

The decision to increase paid sick leave days is a part of a broader initiative by the Irish government to enhance workers’ rights and welfare. Since January 2023, employees have been entitled to three days of paid sick leave per year. However, as of 1st January 2024, this has been increased to five days.

This move was announced by the Minister of State for Business, Employment, and Retail, Neale Richmond, on 17th November 2023. The announcement was well-received by employees across the country, marking a positive step towards improved employment conditions.

Understanding the SSP scheme

Under the SSP scheme, workers are entitled to up to five days of sick leave in a year, paid at 70% of gross daily earnings, subject to a cap of ‚¬110. This provision applies to all employees; however, they must have worked for their employer for at least thirteen consecutive weeks. To receive SSP, the employee must supply a medical certificate signed by a registered medical practitioner stating that they are, or were, unfit to work.

The purpose of the SSP scheme is to provide better protection to workers, particularly those whose employers did not have any existing sick pay arrangements. By doing so, the government aims to create a healthier and more productive workplace environment.

Impact on employers and employees

For employers, this change means they need to update their sick leave policies and make sure their payroll software has been updated for 2024. They also need to ensure that they communicate these changes effectively to their employees.

On the other hand, for employees, this development brings increased job security and financial stability. Workers can now afford to take more time off work when they’re unwell without worrying about the loss of pay. This not only benefits the employees but also contributes to a healthier workplace, reducing the risk of illnesses spreading among staff.

Looking ahead

While this is a significant step forward, the Irish government has further plans to enhance the Statutory Sick Pay provisions. The number of paid sick leave days is set to increase further between now and 2026. The SSP entitlements for each year are currently planned to be as follows.
